SYW Black Powder. The demise of the club. New outlook on gaming & what really is important.

Sorry for recent inactivity.
Quite a lot has happened over the last couple of weeks.
If any of you did'nt know, I get married in two weeks, so getting ready for the big day has sorta taken up quite a bit of my time recently, and will probably continue to do so until it's all done and I am a married man again.
We played Seven Year War "Black Powder" last Thursday evening using the "Last Argument of Kings".
Myself and Glenn with the Russians.
Karl and Trev with the French.
Andy was here for moral support and Tea.
I loved the game, it played very well and I thought had a good feel for the period.
Glenn and Trev enjoyed it to.
Karl was less impressed.
He did say that it was unusual for troops not to move when you wanted them to.
He did say to name him a battle where troops did not do as they were told.
So after spending an hour on the Kronoskaf website (excellent SYW source), I found loads of battles where troops were late, did'nt show at all and various other things went tits up at the wrong moment.
The main point is, we played a game, and thats just what it is, a game.
The game flows, movement is simple but effective.
As the game states, "things move along at a good lick"
The game was played to a finish in 3 hours.
The result was definitive.
I, for one, had fun.
I want to feel as though I had a great night and game with friends at the end of the evening.
I want to finish the evening looking forward to the next weeks game, not sit on my sofa feeling down about it all again.
I cant please everybody, so in future I am going to please myself and be selfish, It's my games room, my time, my refreshments.
Anybody who wants to have a good evening of non serious wargames in a fun environment is welcome.
If you cannot do this, game somewhere else, simples.
Remember, it is just a GAME.
I have come to a point in my life where I just want to play for fun without the serious must win every game attitude. Years in the DBwhatever tourney scene are way behind me, thank god.
I enjoy gaming, that is all, win or lose, I just want to have a bit of fun and enjoy it.
I am sick of learning new rules for new periods, hence "Black Powder".
I will always play "Fire & Fury" for ACW.
I will always Play "General de Brigade" for Naps.
I love to play "SAGA".
I love "Muskets & Tomahawks" for all manner of skirmish games.
But I also want to play SYW, AWI, FIW, Zulu Wars and Colonial & Plains Wars, Hench BP.
I also want to get back into Ancients again.
I am over 50 now and learning all this new stuff is not getting any easier.
We are playing "Trafalgar" again this week and I am really looking forward to it.

The Club has changed again.
Saturday (Daytime) gaming club now, mostly historical. "Black Powder" gaming with a new influx of members from the Mansfield area and new club committee.
The Sunday games club is gone.
The WFC forum is still open for game arranging and comps etc, so we will be a gaming group now instead of an official club.
Any of the guys are welcome at mine for a game.
Well !!
Glad I got that off my chest.
Now work to do, and maybe a little painting later.

  1. Yup, in wargaming, you have "gaming". The most important thing is to enjoy yourself.

That's why I like Art de la guerre for Ancients. They're not perfect, but you have a good game in 2h30 and not too many figures, which is good enough for me.

I'd also like to try BP for 19th century, but I'm not very convinced by Hail Caesar. Don't know why.

    Cheers,

    Seb

I'll check out the Art de la Guerre, not sure about HC myself yet.
More info needed first I think.

  2. The fewer rule sets the better, gaming without fun is pointless!

  4. I too enjoy playing and recreating or conposing a narrative for that game winning and losing are just elements of that story!

  5. You're right, the fun part should always be there. Real life is too difficult, so why make gaming difficult. Good times, with good mates is what matters.

    Peace James
If I lived closer I would be taking you up on an evening in your games room. Hope your wedding goes well.

  7. Fun is the whole reason for doing it. Win or lose. The argument about realism is tired. You're pushing around little men on a table for Christ's sake.
